At the Kansas City Tweetup
Saturday, May 31st, 2008
On Friday evening, the family went up to the roof at Barkley for the first Kansas City Tweetup. For grandmas, grandpas, aunts, and well… probably everyone reading (except for two people), we need to explain what a Tweetup is.
There’s a web service called Twitter that is known as a microblogging service. It simply asks one question: “What are you doing?” From there, you type in what you’re doing in 140 characters or less. As an example, here’s a “Tweet” (Twitter post) from Robin earlier today.
Put @tatertini down for a nap. Trying to figure out why the hell my foot hurts. I’m getting old.
If you’re wondering, @tatertini is Nathan’s Twitter name. I am @3rdmartini and Robin is @rabbittini.
This is really an awful explanation of Twitter, and I know it probably doesn’t make much sense. Really, for the purposes of this post it doesn’t matter. Just know it’s something dad does a lot, mom is starting to do, and Nathan got started with last night.
Anyway, the Tweetup was where all the Twitter users in Kansas City were invited to come and meet each other since most of the time we all know each other only through a bunch of text on the computer screen. It gives every one a chance to put faces to names and make new friends.
Nathan was the smallest Twitterati there, as you can imagine. He dazzled the group with his tiny sandals. Really, just like the art gallery exhibit at the beginning of the month, he was absolutely awesome in public. He loves being social!
