Yesterday mommy had the day off so we went downtown to have lunch with daddy. We went to one of our favorite restaurants, Lulu’s, for some Thai food. Here is Nathan successfully using chopsticks for the first time. He was so proud of himself, he was able to eat just like mommy and daddy.

Nathan received a United States puzzle from Grandma and Grandpa for Christmas this year. It has been really fun to watch him learn the states that he’s visited, the states where his family lives and the different patterns of each state. We’ve put this together a couple times and he’s already learning the state names and some interesting facts about each place (like the fact that rockets launch in Florida). Nathan is really starting to enjoy learning. He’s constantly asking how to spell works or what certain things mean. I love watching his little brain at work!

Brandon had to have surgery this morning to remove his tonsils and adenoids, so Tyler spent the night with us last night and today his is spending the day with Jeremy and Nathan. They had lunch and then went to the movies. They all had a lot of fun together.

I went to see Brandon this morning and he’s doing pretty well. He was talking and I helped him eat orange jello and an orange slushie. Apparently orange is his favorite flavor! He is home now and resting. The next few days will probably be a little rough for him, but in the end he’s going to feel so much better. Hope you get well soon, Brandon!

A couple weeks ago Nathan asked a few curious question about Santa. First, he stood in front of our fireplace, which has a glass cover that can’t be removed, and asked how Santa was going to get into our house if our chimney wasn’t open. Very good question, especially for a 3 year old. Jeremy explained to him that Santa has magic powers and has a way of getting into houses that don’t have chimneys, so he would definitely be able to make it in to our house. That answer satisfied him, but our curious little boy had another concern. He then asked how Santa was going to see our house. I had seen “Reindeer Food” for sale, so I told Nathan we could make some for Rudolph and his friends. In case you weren’t aware, reindeer love oatmeal. Interesting fact. So tonight, after celebrating Christmas with Grandma and Grandpa, Angela, Tyler and Brandon, we came home and made our own reindeer food. Nathan mixed oatmeal and glitter sprinkles, which adds shine and allows the reindeer to see our house. After mixing we sprinkled it in the yard and Nathan I insisted that we needed to put some on the roof, so Jeremy did his best to get some up there. Hopefully Rudolph and his friends enjoy their little snack. :)

“Angel” Nathan

Every year Nathan’s school adopts 3 families. Then there are individual items put up on a board for the school families to chose from. This year we picked 2 stars - a 4 year old boy who wanted a Transformer and a 3 month old baby who needed some teething rings. We have been trying to teach Nathan about giving, so he’s been saving his change in his “give” box. When it was time to purchase our angel gifts we took a family trip to Target. Nathan picked out a really cool teether for the baby and we made our way to the checkout. Once it was his turn he dug all of his money out of his pocket and made his purchase. He was very excited and happy to get his very own bag. He told us it made his heart feel good. What a sweet boy! Hopefully we were able to help a couple kids have a very Merry Christmas.

Last Friday Jeremy and I attended Nathan’s holiday party at school. He was recently moved to a new class, so this was a great opportunity to meet some of his new friends. A great time was had by all, and I’m sure you can guess how much sugar was consumed. The kids also feasted on fruit and veggies, so it was a very well-balanced snack. The above picture is Nathan’s class and his best buddy, Max, is siting next to him. Nathan and Max have been together since the Elephants class and have a lot of fun together. They are silly boys.

My two favorite guys. :)

Nathan LOVES Barnes & Nobel. Every time we go to Zona Rosa we have to visit. I think he thinks it’s like a library, and in a way it kind of is. This is a picture of the boys at their usual spot doing what they usually do, reading books about Star Wars, Legos, super heros or talking animals. Nathan is a very curious boy and we can already tell that he loves learning. Hopefully that curiosity and love of reading continues once he’s in school!

We’ve been in the crafting mood around here lately. I blame the holiday season, the cold weather and the need to occupy a curious and very active almost-4-year-old.

Last weekend Nathan and I made salt dough ornaments for his teachers. Since he just moved up into another classroom this week we decided we needed to give gifts to the teachers from the Giraffe room that he spent the past year with and also the new teachers in the Lion room. We had fun mixing the ingredients, using the rolling pin that Grandma gave Nathan and then cutting out the shapes with Christmas cookie cutters. I had intentions of taking pictures throughout the process, but I was covered up to my elbows with flower.

Since this was the first time I’ve made these ornaments they turned out a little thin. Next year I’ll have to remember to not let Nathan roll the dough out so much. But they still turned out well. Daddy joined in the painting fun and made a special Thomas the Train for Nathan. I added the glitter glue and soon realized that I needed to find many more things to glitter glue, it was so much fun. :)

Our boy really loves to do projects, and I really love spending time with him helping him create his masterpieces. So don’t be surprised if you see more project pictures or even receive one our crafty creations as a gift. I’m going to need to find a place to store all of the crafting supplies we’re acquiring!

Nathan’s school holiday party is this Friday. He wanted me to sign up to bring napkins. Wonderful, I thought, what an easy choice. But after coming home I decided that since I was actually going to be at this party I should probably step up and bring something besides just napkins, cute as they may be. So I enlisted the boys help and we made candy cane reindeers. As you can probably imagine, Michael’s had a run on brown pipe cleaners and red pom pom balls this time of year, so I had to buy the large variety packs. So don’t be surprised if you see more crafts throughout the next year using pipe cleaners in a variety of colors. Side note - anyone have any ideas on good uses for 50 green pom poms?

We had a fun time doing this little family craft. Daddy twisted the pipe cleaners on the candy cane, Nathan bended them to look like antlers and Mommy glued on the red noses. This was a short and very easy project and one that Nathan’s classmates will really enjoy. And the best part is that Nathan can tell them he helped make them.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get some pictures from his party. Last year I was too busy making sure everyone had the food that they wanted and no one spilled their juice. And I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

First Christmas causality

A couple weeks ago Nathan asked if he could have Christmas decorations in his room. He was so sweet when he asked I couldn’t say no. So we bought him a little fiber optic tree and he chose this nutcracker from the dollar section at Target. After using him to (unsuccessfully) crack a few peanuts Mr. Cracker has been sitting on Nathan’s nightstand, watching over him each night as he sleps. This morning when I went in to wake Nathan up I noticed that Mr. Cracker was missing, but I did’t think too much of it. Nathan usually wakes up with no less than 10 things in his bed so I thought Mr. Cracker was in the bed. Once he was awake Nathan jumped out of bed and went over to the corner of his room. He moved his dinosaur away from the wall and stuck his hand behind the monster truck storage box, retrieving Mr. Cracker. He had a very sad look on his face and said, “Mommy, last night I was trying to brush his beard and I broke him. I’m sorry, Mommy. I didn’t mean to do it.” It was so sweet it just broke my heart. He really thought he was in trouble. I took this as an opportunity to tell him that he can tell mommy and daddy anything and he doesn’t need to hide anything from us. We will still love him, no matter what. I stressed that it was important to be honest and admit our mistakes. He smiled and asked if daddy could use his Gorilla Glue to fix him. Nathan already knows that Gorilla Glue is like duct tape to Jeremy, meaning he uses it to fix just about everything. So tonight Jeremy and Nathan will sit at the kitchen table with a big bottle of Gorilla Glue and make Mr. Cracker whole again. He will then go back to his rightful spot on the nightstand and will most likely end up in Nathan’s bed before the Christmas season is over.

Presenting the 2011 Fuksa Family Christmas tree! We had a lot of fun choosing the perfect ornaments to put on the tree. When Nathan woke up this morning he was a little perplexed as to why there weren’t any presents under the tree. I had to explain to him that just because our tree is up doesn’t mean he’s getting any presents yet. He was a little bummed, but after we looked at our Christmas countdown reindeer and realized that there are only 21 days left he decided that he could said a LITTLE bit longer. Oh to be young again!

The weekend after Thanksgiving is when we head out to the Christmas Tree Ranch in Excelsior Springs, MO in search of the perfect Christmas tree. This year, the rain threatened to put a damper on our hunting, but after a review of the weather forecast on Friday night we figured we had about a 1-2 hour window on Saturday morning to find our tree. Mamma and Papa came in from Oklahoma, which is also sort of a tradition for our family. Once the rain stopped we headed out and literally had the entire farm to ourself. Since we knew that the rain could return at any minute we decided not to venture too deep into the farm. We were in search of a narrow tree, the height didn’t really matter since we have 17 foot ceilings. The problem is that trees look a whole lot smaller out in the wide open. After searching high and low, literally, Nathan found us the perfect tree. Nathan and daddy chopped it down and Papa carted it up to the barn. The boys had just put the tree on the top of the truck when it started raining again. Perfect timing! We got the tree home and let it dry out in the garage before brining it upstairs to decorate. The post will be continued above, including a picture of the beautifully decorated tree!

This was just too cute not to share. Teamwork! :)

Nathan and Daddy took a trip to Game Stop this afternoon while Mommy and aunt Angela went shopping. Jeremy has some Wii games that we haven’t played in quite a while, so they went to trade those in. They received store credit and bought a few games and accessories. Nathan picked out Lego Rock Band, mostly because it contains songs from Cars, Kung Fu Panda and Ghostbusters. They also picked out a game for Mommy, which Nathan is playing in this picture. Nathan is having fun both learning how to use the Wii and watching Mommy and Daddy play. We’ve had some great family time this afternoon, and I’m sure there will be much more to come.
